Clarissa Uprooted Documentary at September Neighborhood General Meeting

Neighbors New and Old – don’t miss the Neighborhood General Meeting on Wednesday, September 22nd at 7PM at the Adams Street Recreation Center.

Yes! We will be meeting in person with appropriate social distancing and masks required.

In addition to reviewing the state of the neighborhood in regard to finances, the Holiday House Tour, plans for a 2022 festival, and announcement of new board members, the Corn Hill Neighbors Association in collaboration with Rochester’s Teen Empowerment will host a screening and discussion of the documentary “Clarissa Uprooted: Youth and Elders Uncover the story of Black Rochester.”  This is an opportunity to learn some history of the Third Ward that is not often depicted, and to understand the importance of the Clarissa Street corridor that is the foundation of the African-American Community in Rochester.

The Teen Empowerment and Clarissa Street Reunion Documentary, produced by RCTV, includes interviews of elders who lived in the Clarissa Street neighborhood during its heyday as “Rochester’s Broadway” with neighborly comradery and thriving black-owned businesses, through its destruction when urban renewal, redlining, and Rt. 490 tore through the neighborhood.  Don’t miss this powerful documentary and the opportunity to learn and ask questions about this important period of Corn Hill/Third Ward history.
