The Corn Hill Neighbors Association is pleased to announce four winners of the 2021 Tysean Williams Memorial Scholarship.
- Aidan Delehanty, RCSD World of Inquiry School #58
- Janmae Gause, RCSD School of the Arts
- Jalen McDonald, RCSD Wilson Commencement Academy
- Philomene Ngo-Kunde, RCSD School of the Arts.
The Association’s Philanthropy Committee established the award in 2014 to honor Tysean Williams, a 15-year-old boy who was shot to death defending his grandmother when intruders broke into their Adams Street home. Described at the time as a “shining star,” he was an honor student at Wheatland-Chili High School, which he was attending through the Urban-Suburban program.
To apply for the scholarship, students submit their transcript, letters of reference and a short essay describing what can be done to stop violence within our city. In addition, students must supply acceptance documentation to a post-secondary school of their choice.
Over the years, the scholarships have ranged between $250 to $1,000, totaling $26,000 while providing opportunities for 40 high school seniors. The Scholarships and other neighborhood initiatives are primarily funded by the annual Corn Hill Arts Festival. The Corn Hill Arts Festival will return July 9th & 10th, 2022 after being paused due to Covid-19.
