bike indexEven though there appears to be 3 feet of snow on the ground, you really will be riding your bicycles in the spring before you know it! And to protect your bicycles, Sgt. Joseph of the Rochester Police Department’s Special Operations Section has requested that the Corn Hill Security Committee pass along this information regarding a bicycle registration program that city residents can use. The registration information entered will help get back stolen or misplaced bikes when the police department comes across them.

The program is called The Bike Index and the link to program information and bicycle registration is

According to their website, The Bike Index was co-founded by Seth Herr and Bryan Hance in 2013. Bike Index is a 501c(3)nonprofit. It is the most widely used and successful bicycle registration service in the world, with over 152,000 cataloged bikes, 460 community partners and tens of thousands of daily searches. Seth and Bryan created a universal bike registration service – a database used and searched by individuals, bike shops, police departments and other apps. “A bike registry that gives everyone the ability to register and recover bicycles.”

Here’s how it works:

  • REGISTER YOUR BICYCLE: Submit your name, bike manufacturer, serial #, and component information to enter your bike into the registry.
  • ALERT THE COMMUNITY: If your bike goes missing, mark it as lost or stolen to notify the entire Bike Index community and its partners.
  • THE COMMUNITY RESPONDS: A user or partner encounters your bike, uses Bike Index to identify it and contact you.
  • YOU GET YOUR BIKE BACK!!: With the help of the Bike Index community and its partners, you have the information necessary to recover your lost or stolen bicycle at no cost to you.

The Corn Hill Security Committee encourages you to make use of this great resource to register your bicycles and help protect your property and that of other bike lovers as well.
